A. BODY
Before scientists understood the harmful effects of radiation, the human body acted as a site of destruction that radiation causes. The human hand was the first to experience the devastating effects of X-rays and Radium. The increased knowledge of the effects of radiation did not necessarily result in the protection of the human body. From radioisotopes to nuclear medical technologies, and from the atomic bomb to nuclear reactors the human body has been a site of constant experimentation.
B. PROTECTION
One of the most straightforward implementations of radiation protection are the garments and accessories that have been engineered to protect scientists, physicians, and patients from the harmful effects of radiation. Radiation technologies, whether medical, laboratory, or industrial, have been carefully designed to avoid harm to humans and the environment. This section includes images that showcase the use of this equipment as it pertains to important milestones in history of radiation protection.
C. REGULATION
From the establishment of the International X-ray and Radium Research Committee in 1928 to the founding of the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1957, scientists, administrators, and diplomats have been trying to regulate radiation. Radiation protection has proved to be a Sisyphean battle.
